Glitch
Approaching the theme of digital doppelgangers I pulled from my experience as a digital artist who craves physical work as well as my experiences of both connection and isolation.
As I began planning the piece, the first word that popped into my head was "glitch.” Glitch felt like a fitting reference point because the definition is a "sudden usually temporary malfunction or irregularity." From there I wanted to play with obstructing the face. I knew that I wanted to incorporate a mask because this piece was constructed in the early days of the covid pandemic. At the time when all faces were obscured by masks or veiled through pixels on a screen.
I decided to draw from my background in 3D art, namely polygon mesh which is built of "faces" or triangles that are used to create complex shapes in 3d modelling. I tried to bring in many references to the experience of living through a global crisis with the softness of the dress representing people and the hard sculpture representing the situation.
The piece itself is an expression of my two selves; my knowledge and background in computer graphics versus my physical execution of the construction and embroidery. Techniques used were digital design, laser-cutting, weaving, embroidery, beading, and painting.
